"Back to the Future" Day
So with everyone talking about "back to the future day" and comparing the movie version of 2015 to our own current 2015, I think there is a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why the movies future is not our present, And the reason is Back to the Future 3.
Remember when Doc explained how altering an event in the past can cause the time line to skew off into an alternate version of the time line? Well that is exactly what Doc and Marty did, and not just once more, but twice more within the film trilogy.
First they went back to 1955 again to get the almanac back from Biff which again altered Marty's 1985, maybe only in minor ways but even then the future could have been drastically altered from what we were first shown it to become.
And on top of that they again traveled back even further in time to 1885 and altered events there as well. Again from the point of view of the movie, these were only minor changes to Marty's life but what about the lives of all the people on the train they hijacked?
In the original time line the train was never hijacked and all the passengers reached there destinations on time. But because of the events of BTTF3 Doc and Marty hijack the train and uncouple the passenger cars leaving all those men and women stranded.
Some of them may have been very important business men or other people of great power and influence in many walks of life. There late arrival to an important business meeting could have resulted in an extreme shift in power within a company that's effects might be not noticeable for many decades to come.
The entire spectrum of fashion or technological advancements could have shifted from the original movie version of 2015 into the version of 2015 that we live in today and we wouldn't have even noticed.
We never again see the "future" after the events of BTTF2 we merely assume it remained mostly unaffected because of Marty asking Doc if he is planning to go back to the future and Doc stating "No I've already been there" followed by the reveal of the trains hover conversion. However it is never stated exactly how far into the future Doc went to get the hover conversion done.
We simply assume he traveled back to 2015 when in reality he may have had to travel forward even further, perhaps another 30 years into our own future in order to finally get that hover conversion.
We will simply have to wait and see what wonders the future of 2045 might have in store for us all. As Doc once said "Your future has not yet been written, no ones has, your future is what you make of it, so make it a good one."
